What are the Different Types of Drives & Storage Options

If you are looking to purchase drives & storage, it's easy to get confused between SSD, HDD, and NVME. Each of these drives has its own advantages and is best suited for individual scenarios.

SSDs

SSDs are solid-state drives, that are known for their fast reading and writing speeds. This makes them highly ideal for fast systems, that have less response time and faster boot times. Unlike their counterpart Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) that are spinning disks, SSDs use flash memory chips to store and read data. This makes them way faster than HDDs and allows for greater overall performance. SDDs however are known to be more expensive than HDDs.

HDDs

HDDs or Hard Disk Drives are the most well-known and traditional storage methods used in all kinds of systems. They boast high storage capacities at less expensive rates than SDDs. However, they are slower than all other forms of storage which makes them undesirable for high-end systems that require faster boot time and low response time. Regardless, they are still used commonly where large amounts of data storage are needed as they offer greater storage at a cheaper price.

NVMEs

Next are the NVMEs. These are the Non-Volatile Memory Express drives. They are a type of SDD that utilizes an NVME connection to connect with the system’s motherboard. They offer blazing fast speed, even more than SDDs which makes them the fastest storage drives we currently have. This means that whether you are gaming, video editing, or graphic designing, NVMEs will make your system lightning-fast and give zero lag in the process. However, it is important to note that out of the three drive types, these are the most expensive options. Therefore they are a premium option reserved for those who require the highest level of performance and speed from their system.

Choose Wisely

If you are deciding on what type of storage to get for your system, it may be a good idea to first evaluate your needs and requirements and based on it, decide on a single storage type. While HDDs will give you the cheapest form of storage, it is best for those who have a lot of data to store as backup. If you simply want better storage that you can access faster than an HDD, then it may be better to go for an SDD which will allow for faster bootup reading and writing processes.

However, if you are building a beast of a PC or want to build the ultimate data center, then nothing beats the NVME storage type. Not only does it give the best speed and performance possible but also ensures durability and long-term viability for your system.
