Ubisoft has canceled Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake, ending a project that spent years in development and repeatedly missed release targets. In a message shared on the franchise’s official social channels, the publisher said it could not reach the quality bar players expect. Ubisoft added that continuing would demand more time and funding than it could justify under its current plans.
The company framed the decision as a way to protect what the original game represents. The statement acknowledged that the remake carried meaning for longtime fans and for the developers who worked on it. Ubisoft also stressed that stopping this remake does not mean abandoning the broader series, and it positioned the brand as an ongoing priority.
The remake’s history explains why the cancellation stings. Ubisoft revealed the project in 2020 and initially targeted January 21, 2021 for launch. That date passed, followed by further delays. Development also changed hands. Early work sat with Ubisoft’s teams in Mumbai and Pune, before the project moved to Ubisoft Montreal. Ubisoft rebooted the remake in 2022, a step that usually signals major changes to scope, assets, and production workflows. Even after the reboot, Ubisoft did not provide a detailed public account of what issues the team was solving or how close the remake was to release.
The cancellation also lands during a wider shakeup at Ubisoft. Recent reporting in the same period has linked multiple project decisions to a broader restructure. Those reports referenced cost pressure too, including a proposed reduction of about 200 roles at the company’s Paris headquarters. Ubisoft has described a new operating model built around several “Creative Houses,” designed to tighten accountability for production and publishing. The company has also pointed to increased investment in player-facing uses of generative AI as part of its updated strategy.
For Prince of Persia fans, the remake’s end adds to a mixed recent slate. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown released in 2024, but later reporting tied its performance to a scrapped follow-up and internal staff moves. The series’ most recent release was The Rogue Prince of Persia in 2025, developed externally by Evil Empire.
Ubisoft says the franchise still matters, but it is choosing not to extend this remake’s timeline again. Watch for whether the brand returns through a new mainline game or another external collaboration.
