Borderlands 4 Adds Long-Awaited Photo Mode in Major New Update

Gearbox has released a new update for Borderlands 4, introducing a long-requested feature that players have demanded since launch. The January 29 update brings Photo Mode to all platforms, allowing players to capture in-game scenes with cinematic precision.

The feature is now available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC. It supports both single-player and online multiplayer modes. In single-player sessions, Photo Mode pauses the game while active. In multiplayer, the feature works in real time without freezing the environment. Split-screen functionality is not supported.

Photo Mode offers players full control over camera mechanics and visual composition. Users can adjust field of view, camera rotation, and depth of field to frame scenes. It also includes detailed settings for brightness, contrast, saturation, and gain. Additional creative options include visual filters, vignettes, letterboxing, and overlaying game logos.

Players can control which elements appear in the final image. Options are provided to toggle player characters, NPCs, summons, and damage numbers on or off. Time of day can be changed to capture scenes in different lighting conditions, offering greater flexibility for storytelling or aesthetic screenshots.

To access Photo Mode, players open the pause menu and select the dedicated option. On PC, screenshots can be taken using F12, Print Screen, Snipping Tool, or third-party software. On PlayStation 5, the Share button captures images. On Xbox Series X, users press the Capture button.

This update follows a smaller patch in mid-January that introduced character buffs for Harlowe and Amon and increased the drop rates of Legendary loot from bosses. Photo Mode marks the beginning of a larger content rollout planned for 2026.

Borderlands 4 launched in September 2025 and initially saw over 300,000 concurrent players on Steam. By January 2026, daily active users had declined to around 5,000. While Photo Mode may not be enough to reverse the trend alone, it enhances user engagement and expands the creative potential of gameplay.

Gearbox’s roadmap for 2026 includes level cap increases, cross-platform saves, shared world progression, Pearlescent loot rarity, and new endgame challenges such as raid bosses and Takedown missions. The first major DLC, Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned, is scheduled for March.

The addition of Photo Mode reflects Gearbox’s ongoing effort to respond to community feedback and refine the Borderlands 4 experience.
